
SHOVE TUESDAY
To day is Shrove Tuesday here in Australia and gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians do. . In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them.
It is a day of celebration as well, because it is the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, before Easter therefore on Shrove Tuesday one indulges oneself to use up the foods that are not allowed in Lent.
SOME TRADITIONS OF PANCAKE DAY AROUND THE WORLD
Here in Australia Shrove Tuesday is traditionally called 'Pancake Tuesday, In France and Sweden it is known as Mardi Gras ( 'Fat Tuesday') America this is the last day of 'Carnival'. In Ireland and Britain it is known as Pancake Day. . In Canada they have a tradition of cooking things inside the pancake such as rings, thimbles, thread and coins . In other Europeon Countries they have there own celebration of the day before lent.
